HVPS-4 – High Volume Precipitation Spectrometer

Large-Scale Sampling for Precipitation Particles

The HVPS-4 High Volume Precipitation Spectrometer captures the full spectrum of precipitation particles, from small raindrops to large hail. By integrating four optical array imagers into one system, HVPS-4 delivers reliable, high-volume sampling.

Features

  • High-volume design optimized for intense precipitation events and capturing statistically significant amounts of large particles
  • Captures raindrops, snowflakes, graupel and hail with precision
  • Four optical arrays of two different pixel sizes, providing dual-stereo imaging, extending size range and adding redundancy
  • Very-high data rate
  • Automatic startup and seamless computer communication

Applications

  • Computes aspect ratio of raindrops to calibrate dual-polarized ground radar
  • Radar and satellite precipitation calibration
  • Storm and hail microphysics
  • Rain and ice particle size distribution studiess
